I was blessed with the opportunity to participate in TWO car shows this past weekend…  It wasn’t just because they were local and inexpensive; it turns out both events were the culmination of efforts reflecting selflessness, generosity, and love.

A local retirement home, the Cottages at Saint John’s, played host to about 20 volunteers from the Roaring 20’s club on Friday.  It is basically a retirement facility whose costs are covered by the local Lutheran Church.  I think one of the administrators knows one of our guys in the club, and figured it would be a real treat to bring cars around for the folks to take a look.  Well, the folks in this community were more than thrilled with our participation; despite the extreme heat of the day, they ventured out  to catch a glimpse of the cars, get their fill of ice cream and relay the memories jogged by our fine collection of automobiles.  Even my ride had its share of glances and comments, from both staff and residents.

On Saturday, I went downtown to show Deirdre off at a show benefitting cancer research.  The local chapter of the American Cancer Society holds a walk/run rally called “Relay for Life” every year, along with various events that help raise cash for the Society.  My registration was a check written out to the ACS, and I was pleased to discover that all the monies spent at the show went into the Society’s coffers.   Everything – from vehicle space  to hot dog buns – had been donated, so there was no “administrative” or other detracting costs.

I must admit, I got a lot more out of these shows than simply a “warm fuzzy.”   I was able to meet and discuss my “obsession” with some interesting people, as well as show off Deirdre’s new EMPI-style rims.  All in all, I would say everybody ended up with something to bring home… for me, it is the knowledge that Deirdre and I are becoming more readily accepted into the Billings “car scene.”

Enjoy the pictures on my FaceBook page.  Next up… the Billings All-Original Car Show in July.

STAY TUNED!!
