One would think that June would be the perfect time to hold a car show: sunny skies, with warm breezes and the smell of fresh, green grass. Today was close to that… starting about 3 hours AFTER our show had finished!! Rain and cold dominated the entire time of this year’s car show at the Yellowstone Roaring 20’s clubhouse. Saturday’s “spritz” didn’t deter the participants of the swap meet, and was all but nonexistent halfway through the car auction; Sunday, though, saw harsher conditions with cold winds blowing and nonstop drizzle during our auto show.Last year, “Deirdre” didn’t fare too well with the rain (yeah… it was like this last year, too), rolling along without turn signals and losing a wiper arm up during the trip home. I made sure all the lights worked, and put a dollop of “elbow grease” on the wiper arm fasteners before we headed out to this year’s event.Despite the adverse conditions (both meteorological and economic), our turnout for both days was better than expected: with almost 100 cars on the block, our sales rate was around 30% that raked in almost $230,000 (gross) for the club. I’m not sure how much came in from the swap meet, although I know I helped out by purchasing two nearly-new VW tires for $40.00 and a 1:43 scale Karmann Ghia. On a personal note, I was thrilled to have “Deirdre” in her first show of 2009. It is always fun to see her spark memories and stories from onlookers about Volkswagens. My favorite moments: people on the street or in a car waving, whistling, yelling, etc. as I drive along! Egotistical? Narcissistic? Naaah! I’m just spreading the fahrvergnuen around!! In two weeks, I hope to attend a benefit show for the American Cancer Society, and then the 2nd Annual Billings All-Original Car Show at the end of July. In between time, I’ll continue to scrimp and save for that elusive paint job… STAY TUNED!!
