Title: I was able to shut off the tractor beam...
Category: Full of Life
Blog Entry: After a year and a month, I said goodbye to the folks at the local Wal-Mart. I can only say I lasted as long as I did because of my co-workers and immediate supervisors... they are all wonderful people who, by some superhuman ability unfathomable to me, have stayed the course and perservered withing the walls of the money-craving retail machine. My reasons for leaving stem from a single premise: I cannot fully wrap myself comfortably within the warped "mission" of the Wal-Mart hierarchy. Sam Walton’s vision was to serve the customer… that was the END. Ben Franklin said something to the effect that you take care of the pennies and the dollars would take care of themselves; Mr. Walton’s efforts to taking care of his customers did exactly that… but today’s gameplan is to serve the customer so that he will buy more stuff. As I cannot fully embrace this ideology, it seems only right to find a different line of work.I was called in for an interview at a local hotel. Sometime near the end of June I had applied for a maintenance position for this place; the General Manager called me up and asked me to come in. After about an hour of questions and answers from each other, I knew I had the job “in the bag.” The next day I put in my two-week notice… and I will be starting out as the Maintenance Man of the Fairfield Inn/Marriot on the 23rd. Despite a cut in pay, I feel the more flexible hours, the smaller and team-oriented workforce, and independence of movement to accomplish my duties will all be worth it.A new chapter, a new page... the adventure continues!!
